dc.description.abstract ABSTRACT The research was on internet gambling among university students with the case study of Maasai Mara University in Narok, Kenya. Objectives were to establish the reasons why students gamble, the prevalence of gambling, socio-economic characteristics of students who gamble and the socio-economic effects it has on the students. The study used the descriptive survey design. The study used stratified random sampling. The sample size was 100 respondents. Data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires. Structured questions were analyzed using descriptive statistics example frequency distribution tables, graphs and charts. While analyzing unstructured questions the study used thematic analysis. The study found that more than half of the students participate in gambling. Internet gambling was the form of gambling they mainly participated in. The male students were involved in gambling by a higher percentage than the females while those who were accommodated outside the university gambled more than those who lived in the hostels. The study also found out that the greatest number of students believe that it is not only work and education that could make them achieve their goals. Most students spent 100-500 shillings per week in gambling. The study has revealed the motivations of gambling, it has also shown the negative and positive effects gambling has on students. Internet presence in the university and also mobile money transfer services have great influence in gambling. The study recommends the government and the universities should be proactive in dealing with gambling by developing student specific policies that will help in curbing gambling among the students. en_US
