dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to examine effects of abortion on academic performance among students of Maasai Mara University. The study was guided by the following objectives: to examine the causes of abortion among students of Maasai Mara University; to establish the effects of abortion among students of Maasai Mara University and to find out solutions on the habit of abortion on academic performance among students of Maasai Mara University. The study was carried out as a result of a rise in the cases of abortion among students which has led to poor academic performance on the victims. The study aims at relevant stakeholders involved, the university, government and students to come up with possible solutions that could help reduce cases of abortion among students of Maasai Mara University. Theories such as the theory of knowledge and social cognitive theory were used during the study. The study was carried out within Maasai Mara University and utilized descriptive research design. A sample of 10% of the total population was obtained for the study. The researcher used simple random sampling method to select the sample that represented the whole population. The study used both primary and secondary data collection methods to obtain data. Primary data was obtained through administering questionnaires and interviewing the respondents. Secondary data was acquired from the internet, magazines, newspapers and journals. Data collected was analyzed both quantitively and qualitatively. After data collection, editing was done, then coding to facilitate data entry into the computer system to facilitate analysis. Excel spreadsheet was used to compute the frequencies and percentages. This enabled generalization of the results. Results were presented using percentages, frequencies, tables and charts. The key findings of the study were that majority of the respondents were female aged between 21-23 years. The study also found that unwanted pregnancies was the main cause of abortion among students in Maasai Mara University, health complication which leads to poor academic performance is the main effect of abortion and sexual education in the university would help reduce cases of abortion. The study recommended that every stakeholder involved with the university, that is, the university, students and government, university should help come up with solutions on how to reduce the cases of abortion among students which causes poor academic performance. The expected outcome would be a reduction in the many cases of abortion in Maasai Mara University. en_US
