Factors Affecting Social Services Accessibility For People Living With A Hearing Impairment In Kibera Slum,Nairobi County.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was initiated on the need to establish the factors influencing social services accessibility for people living with a hearing impairment in Kibera slum, Nairobi county. Kibera slum in Nairobi county, Kenya acted as the place for conducting the study. The caregivers of people living with a hearing impairment, stakeholders working with people living with a hearing impairment, Funding agencies targeting people living with a hearing impairment and Community based organizations working with people living with a hearing impairment in Kibera slum acted as the target population. The target sample of 200 was selected out of a population of 2000 individuals. Data collection was performed through questionnaire while analysis was performed through bar charts and presented.Tables and Figures were used to summarize the data The study established that participation of stakeholders influences much on social service accessibility for people living with a hearing impairment in Kibera slum, Nairobi county. The study further found out that funding influences to a great extent social service accessibility for people living with a hearing impairment. Also it found that a unit increase in capacity of caregivers leads to an increase in social services accessibility for people living with a hearing impairment in Kibera slum. Based on the findings this study recommended that more attention should be given to people living with a hearing impairment and also the government, as a policy intervention, should review the funding of social service programs for people living with a hearing impairment by fully extending the support to all local community organizations in informal settlements.
