dc.description.abstract Millions of people in the whole world have limited access to clean drinking water which is a necessity. Yearly, million lives of people are saved by providing access to clean water. In many communities of developing countries, using of clean water is a prime concern. Luckily, cheap and efficient water purification system are being tried and utilized. Currently, adsorbents are widely used to relieve widespread difficulties of treating water because of been cheap, materials are locally available and simpler in construction but effective. Designs of various water filters have been in use e.g. slow sand water filters but in this project a low cost adsorption water filter of clay pot particles was designed in order to focus in systems which are suitable in water treatment. Locally available materials were exploited to ensure clean water is supplied. In this project, the clay and the broken pot pieces were sampled from two different sites and the clay pot pieces used in construction of the water filter which was done by use of hands and no machine was used. Analysis was done by use of Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS) to determine heavy metals levels in clay and the clay pot pieces, pH values of clay, broken pot pieces and water(both filtered and non-filtered) were determined by use of pH meter. Filtration potential of the water filter was determined by calculating TDS, TS and TSS together with determining the microbial content. Heavy metal analysis, designing and fabricating the water filter and analysis of the filtration potential all were determined in this project en_US
