dc.description.abstract The main objective of this study was to assess types, quantities and management of organic waste by non- resident students of Maasai Mara University. The study employed both the use of the primary and secondary data. The primary method of data collection was the use of direct observation, interviews and questionnaires. Secondary data involved a thorough literature review on other people’s views on organic waste management. It composed review of written articles and books on the internet on sustainable management of organic wastes within the households. Systematic sampling was used in administering questionnaires and interviewing the sample in the field. The sources and types of organic wastes produced by the household occupied by non-resident students were identified. Organic wastes produced on daily basis with their quantities and ways of managing them were also identified. Also, impacts caused by organic wastes at disposal sites were identified and respondents proposed mitigation measures. Data from the field was analyzed by the use of Microsoft Office 2010. Organic waste produced by each household was found to be up to 3 kilograms on a daily basis. Specific collection points were not available as these areas were far from the town. The study also found out that organic wastes in these areas were mainly from the kitchen remains and papers. The study ends by recommending the county government to take part in stipulating measures to the households on proper ways of managing the organic wastes in order to promote sustainable organic waste management. en_US
