Abstract:
Tourism generated practices has been taking place across the world at all tourist’s attraction points as it can be a source of both economic and social benefits, particularly in undeveloped and developed countries. However, mass tourism is also associated with negative impacts. Studies on FGM and culture on pupils’ academic performance has been done but none has been done on tourism hence a need to carry out this study. Statistics released by Kenya’s Ministry of Tourism (2012) indicate that, since Maasai Mara Game Reserve was declared the seventh wonder of the world over 75,000 tourists have been visiting the reserve annually. The influx of tourists in the area besides its economic benefits, may affect academic performance of pupils in the educational divisions in the neighborhoods of the Reserve, due to its tourism generated socio-economic factors.
The purpose of this study will be to investigate the influence of tourism generated socio-economic factors on pupils academic performance in Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in Narok South Sub-County in regards to; Finding out how socio-economic interaction among tourists, pupils and parents affects academic performance in KCPE, to determine how tourism affects pupil’s academic performance in KCPE in public primary schools, to find out the effects of teacher-tourist socio-economic activities on pupil's academic performance in Narok South Sub-County and to establish measures that can be put in place to improve pupils’ academic performance in Narok South Sub-County. The study will utilize descriptive research survey design. The target population for this study will be 81 public primary schools from Narok South Sub-county. The subjects will be standard eight Pupils, Teachers, and Parents Association (PA) committee members. The ten schools which will be selected will be 12 percent of all schools in Narok South Sub-County. Proportionate sampling will be used to distribute schools; Mara, six and Loita, four schools respectively. All Class eight pupils, Teachers and PA members in the selected schools will be purposively chosen to obtain a total sample of 490 subjects. The study will utilize questionnaires to collect data. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze data with the help of SPSS. The study is expected to provide useful information for Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, County Education Officers, Parents, Teachers and County Administrators.
