The general objective of the study was to establish effects of health and safety practices on organization performance. The following specific objectives gave a guide to the study: To find out the effects of safety education and training on employee performance of NARUWASCO Salgaa, to determine how safety engineering affects employee performance of NARUWASCO Salgaa and to find out effects of wearing of protective clothing on employee performance of NARUWASCO, the finding of the study was useful NARUWASCO Salgaa for it could provide base for the formulation of effective health and safety practices in NARUWASCO Salgaa. Actors of labor relation in Kenya (tripartite parties) the Federation of Kenya employee (KFE), the central organization of trade union (COTU) and the government through the ministry of labour can refer to this study during collective bargaining agreement and negotiation to the working condition, employee’s salaries, working hours, settlement of industrial disputes and rights and responsibilities of employee and the employers. The study targeted population of 116employees from NARUWASCO. The study used purposive sampling in sampling the top management and the middle level management and stratified random sampling in sampling of the staff to get a total sample of 37 employees. Data was collected using close-ended questionnaires. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, tables and charts. The finding revealed that the organization has been using only one type of safety practice which is occupational health and safety practice. On health and safety training and education they are necessary for all employees in the company because it develops safety consciousness among the employees and it will result in safe handling of equipment’s. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommended that other types of safety practices such as ergonomics safety practice work place violence prevention practice, electrical and eye safety practice should be well formulated and implemented with the involvement of employees. Proper training should be conducted during orientation of new employees and be revised regularly to all employees. The management should enhance or introduce employee safety motivation and incentive programmes so as to encourage employees to work safely and contest for safe work behaviour. The researcher suggested that further research should be done to assess the effects of health and safety practices on the economy of the country. |
