Abstract:
Work environment mean processes, systems, structures, tools or conditions in the workplace that influence favorably or unfavorably individual’s performance Gunaseelan (2010). It also includes policies, rules, culture, resources, working relationships, work location, and internal and external environmental factors, all of which influence the ways those employees perform their job functions. The objective of the researcher was to find out whether comfort, adequate facilities, interaction and office design influence employees’ performance in a public hospital in Narok. In literature review, the researcher used to explain how work environment factors influence the performance of an employee has used Herzberg’s (1966) motivator-hygiene theory and Adams' Equity Theory (1965). In a simple conceptual framework, the researcher shows how independent variables (comfort, adequate facilities, interaction and office design) influence the dependent variable (employees’ performance). The research design that will be used is a descriptive study. The study had a population target of 150 employees and an accessible population of 130 employees; in order to accommodate the heterogeneous nature of the population, stratified sampling technique was used to draw samples. Qualitative data were collected using questionnaires whereas qualitative one by interviews. The data collected was analyzed using Microsoft excel and presented descriptively through tabulations, charts and graphs. This study concluded that the quality of interaction, facilities, level of comfort and office design in the employees’ work environment influences employees’ level of motivation and subsequent performance. The study recommends that organization should expand the health maintenance programs, supervisor-training programs and stress reduction workshops.
