Abstract:
Education is seen as a pillar for developing awareness and behaviour change for sustainable development. It can be used to provide students with knowledge, skills, and experiences essential to become successful national and international leaders, as well as making intellectual decisions pertaining to the management of their natural resources, hence ensuring sustainable development. The paper examines how English Language Teaching in secondary schools in Kenya is used for developing awareness and behaviour change for sustainable development. The instrument used for data collection was analysis of Integrated English Language course books and instructional documents. The study revealed that there is minimal instruction of sustainable development related content hence lack of higher order skills such as acquiring, analyzing and synthesizing information about sustainable development by learners. It was concluded that to ensure meaningful use of English Language Teaching as a vehicle for sustainable development, summative evaluation in productive skills should include issues on the subject. What we choose to evaluate inevitably determines what is taught, and how we evaluate it influences how we teach it.
