Successful management of today’s education system effective policymaking and system monitoring through data information and knowledge is essential. Consequently, countries have invested significant resources into collecting, processing, integrating, analyzing and reporting data through Education Management Information Systems (EMIS). The purpose of this paper was to review the status and progress of implementation of EMIS in Kenya and to evaluate critical success factors for implementation of these systems in Kenyan academic sector.A desktop research was conducted with secondary data being collected mainly from academic journals and government policy documents. According to the findings, a form of EMIS was found to be operational at the Ministry of Education though with limited features. Its benefits include accountability, planning, monitoring and information sharing. However, important factors that are critical to the success of EMIS include capacity building and staff development, infrastructural development, ability to guarantee confidentiality and privacy of information gathered and timely reporting of statistical data in Kenyan education sector.
