Abstract:
This paper explores the potential for community- based adaptation to climate change (CBA) as an alternative paradigm for sustainable management of agro-pastoral production systems of Kenya. Climate change poses particular challenges for agro-pastoral communities, who, in general, are largely natural resources dependent and experience high climate variability and extremes. This paper, based on review, responds to the lack of critical attention paid to dominant undertakings of how to implement adaptation to climate change in a new way that best serves the needs of local people. It addresses the dearth of local voices in mainstream international adaptation knowledge, therefore contributing to more effective climate change adaptation projects in agro-pastoral areas. The paper observes that, CBAs when adapted, are; Participatory; reduces vulnerability; based on local knowledge, needs and priorities, and; empowers communities to help themselves in adapting to climate change.
