Abstract:
Kenyans are not ignorant about environmental pollution, but do not follow the laws leading to environmental conservation, they wait until the problem becomes worse and uncontrollable, so as to start acting. This can be clearly observed from dumped used polythene and plastic containers of used water, thrown anywhere and everywhere in towns of Kenya. The problem of the study is poor waste management of used polythene bags and plastic materials leading to environmental pollution in the highways and estates in towns of Kenya. The polythene and plastic materials keep rain water and become breeding sources of mosquitoes which spread malaria and children misuse them to contaminate water leading to spread of such diseases as diarrhea, dysentery and cholera. The objective is to study the best strategy or modality to be used to manage the waste [polythene bags and plastic materials] to conserve the environment. The research will use interview and observation method to collect data from department of public Health, in ten sampled of towns [Lodwar, Kitale, Garissa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Nakuru, Mombasa, Nairobi, Narok, Kisii] in Kenya. The findings will be important for stakeholders to use stringent measures to conserve environment. It is concluded poor disposal of polythene and plastic materials is becoming a menace and environmental pollution in the highways, villages, towns, homesteads and anywhere in Kenya. The research recommends the government to ban manufacturing of such materials and introduce paper materials as being used in 1970-80s; use a recycling or destruction method to arrest and safe the situation.
