Abstract:
In-Service Training (INSET) of secondary schools teachers is important for effective performance of their roles. This training is sometimes done without doing Training Needs Analysis (TNA). This study therefore endeavoured to identify the training needs of Secondary School Teachers in Manga Sub-County. The objectives of this study were to find out: The competency level, the adequacy and relevance of the INSET programmes, and what can be done to enhance the INSET programmes for Secondary School Teachers in the Sub-County. The study was done in Manga Sub-County. The study used descriptive survey research design. The study population was all the 430 Teachers in the 27 Secondary schools in the Sub-County. Stratified, saturated and random sampling was used to sample the respondents yielding a study sample of 42 respondents: Questionnaires and an interview guide were used to collect data. Quantitative data was quantitatively analysed. Qualitative data was analyzed thematically. The study found out that the Teachers’ competencies in all the 10 areas studied were average. The INSET programmes for teachers were untimely, inadequate, took very short time, and used methods, facilitators and training materials which were of little help. The INSETs were also not based on any TNA results and no assessment of the impact of training on performance was ever done. The study recommends that: Teachers in Manga Sub- County to be trained on the 10 competence areas identified. To improve on the INSETs, the ministry of Education should put in place the following intervention measures: Make training compulsory and free to the target group of teachers, ensure that the training sessions are regular and well coordinated, always do TNA before mounting any training programme, doing an assessment to find out the impact of training on performance, using well trained and qualified facilitators and using adequate and relevant resources and facilities for each training sessions.
