Abstract:
Owing to the tremendous contribution of SMEs make in the industrial upbringing and overhauling of economic condition this sector has been chosen so that possible solutions could be suggested for the improvement in performance measures. The purpose of this study will be to establish the effect of total quality management practices on performance of SMEs in Narok County. Six determinants of TQM practices were identified and their impact was examined against the performance of SMEs in Narok town. The investigated determinants which formed the basis for the objectives included customer focus, supplier relationships, employee involvement and empowerment, work environment and benchmarking. The study used descriptive survey design. The target population was the 500 owners of SMES in Narok town who operate licensed business and employ two employees and above. A sample of 50 businesses was selected randomly from a list of businesses registered with the town council of Narok. The study use questionnaires administered personally to ensure high response. The study established that the TQM is an important factor The study results shall be of benefit to the MSE operators who are expected to improve their total quality management practices which shall assist them to improve their performance. The government will benefit as the results are expected to assist in improving efficiency of SMEs and this will mean creation of more jobs and improvement of the economy.
