Abstract:
Knowledge is critical for any development because everything we do depends on knowledge. Today’s most technologically advanced economies are truly knowledge-based since they generate new wealth from their innovations, thus creating millions of knowledge related jobs in an array of disciplines that have emerged from institutions that produce and support the free flow of knowledge and information. Information technologies are advancing at a tremendous rate. Such technical advances reflect progress in technical knowledge. This means that the information revolution spurs the creation of new quick access to knowledge. This paper discusses in depth the concept of knowledge information systems by assessing knowledge gaps and defines knowledge related problems. It focuses on why organizations rely on Knowledge Management Systems and providing a foundation in these systems, together with a taxonomy of the main categories that fall under the Knowledge Management System. The paper argues that if different forms of knowledge management systems (KMS) are instituted, instilled in an organization and managed effectively can equip current and future managers with some of the knowledge and practical skills to keep them steer their organizations towards Knowledge management. These include not only how to deal with knowledge-related problems and select an appropriate Knowledge Management Systems, but also how to implement it effectively; including associated organizational, technological and strategic decision the organization faces.
