Abstract:
This project is to provide useful insights to the university administration and the police on the security situation in and around the University. It also provides the students with suitable information to help them choose their areas of residence especially those residing outside the University. In this research the suitable survey design was used to a wide range of variables associated with crime in Maasai Mara University and its environs. Descriptive research approach was the most appropriate method sought to find out the various factors related to occurrences outcomes and conditions of behavior. In the course of my study, the data was provided by Narok police station on the reported cases of crime for a period of twelve months starting from October 2013 to September 2014. Also data on the reported cases of crime provided by the office of the chief security officer of Maasai Mara University. In the past one year Maasai Mara University and its environs has record an increase In the number of crimes reported ranging from theft, burglary, mob injustices, rape and the recently witnessed student violence. Due to this increase number of crimes, the main causes of crime committed within and around Maasai Mara University. The research sought to establish the main crimes reported in and around Maasai Mara University, examine whether there exists a relationship between the year of study among the students and the type of crime. It also expects to examine the relationship between gender and criminal activities.Crime is an act of breaking rules and laws for which some governing authority through mechanisms such as legal systems can ultimately prescribe a conviction. In the past, crime in higher learning institution have resulted into student unrest leading to damage of property, loss of life and paralysis of learning operations thereby impacting negatively on the economy.
