dc.description.abstract ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to profile the state of gender based violence and gender based violence survivors, the state of medical, psychological and legal aspects of gender based violence of the survivors. This was done through the assessment of the Nairobi Women’s Hospital Gender Based Recovery Center. There is also a background on the Nairobi Women’s Hospital Gender based violence Recovery Center in order to understand what the institution is all about. Aside from informing the gender based violence recovery center, a suitable model was suggested as suitable for the institution. This model was the hybrid of both the multi-sectoral and the multi-level models in responding to gender based violence. The objectives of this study were to: find out the beliefs of gender based violence, which looked at the world, African, east African and Kenyan view of gender based violence; legal provisions protecting women against gender based violence; programs and services being offered at the Nairobi Women’s Hospital Gender based violence Recovery Center. This study adopted a descriptive design the use of observation, questionnaire and case studies. The study population entailed gender based violence survivors documented in the Nairobi women’s hospital gender based violence recovery center annual report of 2010-2011. A working sampling frame was established since the gender based violence recovery center works on intervention. The present data involved both male and female gender based violence survivors. The Nairobi women’s annual report conducted its analysis on 2909 patients who reported to the center. The clusters were made from this population. According to the findings, the major causes of gender based violence include; social norms that tolerate and justify violence against gender orientation; presence of crime and conflict; weak community sanctions against perpetrators of gender based violence; alcohol and drug abuse and traditional gender norms that support gender superiority and entitlement. An assessment of the Nairobi Women’s Hospital Gender Based Recovery Center will shade light on the importance of institutions on gender based interventions. en_US
