Abstract:
The metaphor as defined in Kiswahili literature is a saying with a hidden meaning. It takes the form of a
questioning statement that requires the listener to give a one word answer. However the Kiswahili word for
metaphor ‘fumbo’ refers to any text with a hidden meaning. This paper discusses the new forms of the Swahili
metaphor based on its usage. The study uses the conceptual theory of metaphor to analyze the use of metaphors
in Kyallo Waddi Wamitilas plays so as to reveal the new forms of metaphors. Data was collected through
document review of Wamitilas plays. Data was then subjected to textual analysis. The analysis showed that there
is a transformation in the form and use of the metaphor due to its cognitive aspect and character of
intergenericity. This hence affects the concept and the place of the metaphor as a genre in Kiswahili literature.
